Hello All,
I think this is an important issue so I decided to jot down a quick article about it while I try to get my act together on posting pictures (I think I messed up my other article with deletes). Please read this before you click on the link because I want to tell you about it first. My daughter found this VIDEO on you tube and it is not exactly easy to watch. It was filmed in the UK and as far as PSA's go I think it will be pretty effective. Texting and driving is not something I have done, but I have done all kinds of stuff that distracted me, everything from talking on the phone to glancing at a message, and eating (fast food mostly). In this video the driver and her passengers pay the ultimate price for that.
This VIDEO is one that I found extremely disturbing, the depiction of a little baby dying was I think for me the worst part. That and the sounds of necks snapping and bone's breaking in slow motion no less. This is definitely not viewing for the faint of heart, if these kinds of images are too disturbing for you then don't watch it. There is plenty of room for discussion without having to see it. I am trying to picture what it would be like sitting in front of the telly eating my....(trying to think of some awfull British Pub Food)....sheep stew and this PSA comes on. There I would be already a little grossed out by the manky taste of my baaaaaad soup and suddenly this comes on, between the taste of the already bad food and the gross injuries and dead babies I think I might have to yack up a hoove or something.
That said I really hope it helps teen-agers to understand how dangerous it is to text and drive. There is something so wrong with a parent having to bury a child, it's just not the way things are supposed to work. My heart goes out to every parent that has lost a child due to this kind of tragedy. When something like this takes away your kid, you lose everything you had and everything you were going to have. This kills children by the car load! Please everybody teach your kids about texting and driving. Here is an article about kids learning about the dangers of distracted driving.
Lawmakers have of course included bans on texting but without education kids just do it anyway. I have two daughters who are very social (sometimes it feels like I need an appointment) and their cell phone's are always getting text messages. They know there is a giant switch in the sky, and I will use it to shut off their cell phones if I ever even hear about them texting and driving. Sometimes I think there should be a safe cell phone you can buy that just doesn't do text at all for parents that worry. Even a way that you could shut off the text feature of the phone for the text addicted child who can't seem to be responsible for their own safety. Until then be safe out there, and protect your kids from making a tragic mistake. JJ
